The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), in collaboration with the Fiji Muslim League, is proud to announce the launch of a joint initiative this Ramadan focused on promoting sustainable practices and enhancing consumer awareness in alignment with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) goals.

During this month of fasting, FCCC and the Fiji Muslim League will release regular messages that encourage actions such as reducing food waste, conserving energy and water, shopping ethically, environmentally friendly practices, and educating others on the importance of sustainability.

This initiative underscores the commitment of both organisations to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals and aligns closely with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and cultural values.

FCCC CEO, Joel Abraham, stated, “This partnership reflects our dedication to fostering an inclusive, ethical, and environmentally friendly marketplace in Fiji. We are particularly excited to
address the cultural and religious needs of all consumers during this significant time, ensuring that the spirit of Ramadan is celebrated sustainably.”

“We also see this partnership as an opportunity to foster awareness of the SDGs and inspire our community to take action towards a more sustainable future.”

FCCC has also received complaints regarding the misuse of ‘Halal’ certifications by certain businesses for marketing purposes. In response, FCCC will be working closely with the Fiji Muslim
League to address these concerns, ensuring that religious certifications are used accurately and responsibly, reflecting the true nature of products and services.

“As a multicultural nation, it is crucial that the religious needs and rights of all Fijians are respected. We are dedicated to ensuring that consumers are treated fairly and with respect, and this includes the accurate representation of products that meet religious requirements,” added Abraham.

“Products and services marketed as “Halal/حالل “must meet the correct standards and not mislead consumers for commercial gain.”

The Fiji Muslim League emphasised the importance of leveraging this auspicious Ramadan to showcase their dedication to environmental stewardship, and the cultivation of sustainable
practices apart from spiritual reflection and devotion during this holy month. The aim is to instigate a ripple effect of positive transformation that extends well beyond the Holy month of Ramadan, advocating for sustainability and conscientious and responsible consumption at all times.

FCCC is committed to upholding the religious rights and fair treatment of all consumers, ensuring that Fiji remains a vibrant and multicultural nation.

Let us make this Ramadan a time of positive impact and mindful consumption. By taking small steps together, we can contribute to the larger goals of sustainability and fairness in our society.
